Part 3: Intertextuality Research

Intertextuality is the way in which one media text references another or the concept of borrowing from, modifying and recycling other media texts to create a new media text. It is often used to generate feelings of recognition, nostalgia or familiarity for an audience experiencing a new media product. Indirect Intertextuality is where a text shows traces of another text due to being inspired by it. An example of this is Beyonce's Who run the World music video, which makes references to the Mad Max film.

Direct Intertextuality is where we make a direct link deliberately for a reason. Directors do this because they want the audience to make the links and realise something. An example of this is The Joy of Painting by Bob Ross and Dead Pool 2. Dead Pool 2 makes a direct reference to The Joy of Painting for Parody.

Intertextuality referencing in music videos is not a new concept. Examples can be found in videos that date back several decades. For example, Madonna's 'Material Girl' video makes reference to Marilyn Monroe's 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' from the 1953 film 'Gentlemen prefer Blondes'.

One of the most recognisable forms of intertextuality within music videos is Iggy Azalea and Charlie XCX's 'Fancy' Music video. The video is almost a parody of the classic 90s teen rom-com 'Clueless', but rather than making fun of the film, the music video consists of recreating some of the more recognisable scenes from it.

However, Film is not the only media text that has influenced music videos. The red hot Chilli Pepper's music video for 'Californication' (2001) characterises the band being digitally made into characters in video games, such as 'Grand Theft Auto' and 'Tomb Raider', which were popular at the time.

Summary of  Research

The information I had gained from the research I undertook helped me understand what makes a music video influential and what it takes to be featured on MTV and VEVO. This information helps me with my production as I know the different shots, lighting, costumes, etc.. to have successful video.

NEA Briefs

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • K: The requirements for each of the briefs set by OCR.
  • U: How to approach the chosen brief, including writing the statement of intent.
  • BAT: Choose a brief and start planning what to write in the statement of intent.
  • CO: Use media terminology (all areas of the theoretical framework) in your written and verbal communication.

I chose the music video and website brief because I think it would be an interesting type of media to explore. On the music video side, I will be challenging myself in order to create it such as the different angles and shots, whereas, for the website, I already have the skills and knowledge in order to create one. When editing the footage, I have the skills to use Premiere Pro. These skills include cutting and adding clips, zooming in and out, adjusting audio, adjusting colour contrast and adding colour effects, adding transitions for visual and audio effects and much more. In relation to this, I want to add to these skills and learn more to a high standard. I also want to learn how to use final cut. For the making of the website, I know how to use Blogspot, Wixx, and briefly, Adobe Portfolio. I want to learn how to use photoshop as I think it will be needed for Photos which will be featured on the website.
